Grunow vs Valor Extortion Trial

A little background.......

School teacher Barry Grunow was shot and killed on school grounds by one of his students, Nathan Brazil.

Brazil broke into a relatives home and stole a loaded Raven .25 semi-automatic handgun which was kept in a metal box in a drawer.

Brazil had seen his relative shoot the gun on New Years Eve, a careless event in its own, and knew he had a gun.

Brazil at the time was 14 years old and was tried as an adult and convicted. The bleeding hearts cried foul because Nathan was tried as an adult. Too bad.

The school video cameras captured the event and Brazil claimed that the gun accidentally went off. Even though he clearly pulled the slide back and loaded a round into the chamber.

Enter Ambulance chaser, Bob Montgomery and his law firm. Like a buzzard circling road kill, Montgomery smelled money. He sued in the name of the widow Pam, the relative who owned the gun and the pawn shop that sold the gun. Both insurance companies settled out of court for over 5 hundred thousand dollars.

But that wasn't enough money for Bob and Pam. They went looking for another patsy. They eventually found it in Valor Corporation, a Florida firearms distributor who distributed the Raven. They would have gone after Raven but due to a fire, it was out of business. The amount of the lawsuit is 75 million dollars.

Their claim is that the Raven was a cheap "Saturday Night Special" that had no purpose but to be used in crimes because of its size and price. In effect they wanted to hold Valor responsible for selling a legal gun, in a legal manner that was eventually used in an illegal way by a murdering thug, Nathan Brazil.

This is clearly a product liability suit which usually claims that a product is defective. But any normal thinking person would claim that the gun operated as it was designed to do. In the hands of a killer, it killed. Montgomery is playing on the sympathy of the jury with appearances by Pam Grunow and her sad pathetic look and child murderer, Brazil.

These are cheap tactics because the case cannot survive on the facts. Numerous product liability lawsuits against gun makers have been thrown out of court across the country by intelligent Judges and the courts. Unfortunately we have a Judge, Jorge LaBarga, who would rather make a name for himself than uphold the law. Justice in this case is Deaf, Dumb and Blind.

If this lawsuit is won and the appeal is upheld, it could have severe repercussions for the gun industry. Lets hope that the jury weighs the facts and not emotion.

SACFLA's board met to see what we could do since this event was right in our own back yard. We decided to make a video showing that the .25 Raven operates as any firearm would. We put the Raven through various tests and found no defects.
This video is available in two CD formats. A quick time movie which will play on a computer and in vcd that will play on most dvd players.
It has been distributed to the local media outlets and is available on request. E-mail or call us.
